刺青は肌絵とも呼ばれるように広義においては絵画の一種であるが、複雑な凹凸から成る人体を下地とするため平面に描き出すものとは様相を異にする。とりわけ腕一本を使う作品では、肩や肘といった可動部を含む円柱形状であるというその特異性を念頭に置いて構図を組み立てなければならない。
Irezumi is a type of painting in the broad sense of the term as is called hada-e (skin painting), but since they are on the human body, which is made up of complex irregularities, they are different from other paintings on a flat surface. In particular, sleeve works must be composed in consideration of the uniqueness of arms’ cylindrical shape with movable parts, such as shoulders and elbows.
YELLOW BLAZE TATTOOのSHIGE氏の直近の作であるこの迦陵頻伽（かりょうびんが）は、その難点をかえって巧みに活かしている。頭部を上腕の比較的フラットな箇所ではなく肩の丸みに配することで立体感を生み出し、上下左右に視点を移した際に異なった趣を呈するよう演出されているのだ。描画域の限られる女性の細腕をキャンバスとしながらも、迦陵頻伽の優美な華やかさが伸び伸びと表現されている。
This latest work of Karyobinga by Shige from Yellow Blaze Tattoo, skillfully takes advantage of this difficulty. Her head is placed on the rounded shoulder rather than on the relatively flat part of the upper arm, creating a three-dimensional effect to give a different appearance when the viewer shifts their perspective. While using a woman’s slender arm as a canvas, the graceful splendor of Karyobinga is expressed in an elongated manner.
