【コンマ数ミリの微差を逃さぬ 質感の探求者】
肌をかすめるかのごとき繊細な手さばき。あたかもニードルが肌に当たっていないかのようにさえ見えるが、目を凝らすとコンマ数ミリの精緻さで、しかし確実にインクが皮下に彫り込まれている。
His delicate hand movement seems as if he is just grazing the skin. It looks as if the needle does not reach the skin’s surface, but under closer inspection, you realize, that in fact, the ink is being applied under the skin with tremendous precision; a few tenths of a millimeter.
その一手々々が残すインクはあまりに微小ゆえ、何を描いているかを推察する糸口にすらなり得ない。けれどセッションが進み、それ単体では意味を持たぬ点と点が結び付いて集合になったとき、言葉を失うほどに写実的に描かれた対象が姿を表す。
The ink left by each stroke is so minuscule that it is impossible to even guess what is being drawn. However the session progresses and the seemingly meaningless dots are connected to form an object, depicted with such realistic features, that the viewer becomes lost for words.
針先の寸分の乱れも許さぬ鋭い眼光で施術を進めるのは、沖縄を拠点にリアリスティックタトゥーを探究するHOLYTOMO氏。海外のタトゥーマガジンの表紙を飾ったこともある実力派で、日本においてはメインストリームとは言い難いリアリスティックを奮激せしめんと日々の精進を怠らない熱血漢だ。
The artist who performs this fine procedure, who is so precise that he leaves no room for even the slightest disturbance with the needlepoint is Holytomo, an Okinawa-based realistic tattoo explorer. Holytomo is a talented artist who has been featured on the cover of a foreign tattoo magazine, and is a passionate person dedicated to making realistic tattooing that is not well-known in Japan, more popular.
今回、同じくブラック＆グレーを自らのスタイルとして研鑽を積む新鋭アーティストのSEN氏が率いる東京LAZY TATTOOにて、ゲストワークに励んでいるところを取材させてもらうことと相なった。
We had the opportunity to interview him while he was hard at work as a guest artist at Lazy Tattoo in Tokyo, which is led by Sen, an up-and-coming artist who has also been making a profound study of black and gray works; his style of choice.
リアリスティックは写真をベースに下絵を作り、それを針とインクで肌に再現していくわけだが、HOLYTOMO氏はその際、質感の表現を一義に置いて追求している。「そのためにはただ写真そのままに彫るのではなく、質感を如何に“伝える”かを考えることが大切」なのだと説く。
Realistic tattoos usually start with a preliminary sketch created from initial photographs, which is copied onto the skin with needle and ink. Holytomo pursues the expression of texture as a primary concern. He explains, “It is important to think about how to ‘convey’ the texture, rather than just simply tattooing the image as it appears in the photograph.”
逆説的であるが、写真のコピーとなることを棄て、感覚に訴える表現とすることでより一層の写実性を獲得しているのだ。そしてそのアプローチが個性を演出しづらいリアリスティックというカテゴリーにあって、氏の作品を出色のものたらしめている。
Paradoxically, his work gains more reality by refusing to be copies of photographs, instead being expressions which appeal to the senses of viewers. This approach makes his work stand out in the realistic category, where it is difficult to create individuality.
動物の毛並み、骸骨のざらつき、人の肌の柔らかさ。そうした質感の機微を描き出すために、HOLYTOMO氏は常時十種類近いカートリッジニードルを用意してセッションに臨む。これは一般的なアーティストが用いる数の倍以上だ。
In order to capture the subtleties of textures such as the fur of an animal, the roughness of a skeleton, and the softness of human skin, Holytomo always has nearly ten different types of cartridge needles ready for the session. This is more than twice the number used by most artists.
「針を変えることでわずかでも違いが生じるのであれば、その微差は無視できない」と話す氏の表情からは、一切の妥協を許さぬ厳しい自戒が垣間見える。タトゥーマシンの先端で針をガイドする部位をチップと呼ぶが、髪一本の細さほどの正確さが要求される氏の作風においては、チップの厚みさえもが狂いを引き起こす障害になりうると言う。
“If changing the needle makes even the slightest difference, that small difference cannot be ignored,” he says, revealing a strict self-discipline that does not allow any compromise. In his style, accuracy is required to apply things as fine as a strand of hair. He insists that the thickness of the tip of the tattoo machine can be an obstacle that causes him to deviate from the final design.
突き詰められたディテールにHOLYTOMO氏の作品の魅力があることは言わずもがなだが、その見せ方にも工夫がある。氏は17世紀頃のバロック絵画、特にカラヴァッジョとレンブラントに傾倒しており、強烈な光源を想定した光と陰の描き方や鑑賞者の視線の誘導の仕方などに多大な影響を受けている。
It goes without saying that the charm of Holytomo’s work lies in the painstaking detail, but there is also ingenuity in the way it is presented. He is devoted to Baroque painting from the 17th century, especially Caravaggio and Rembrandt. These artists have greatly influenced his work by the way they depict light and shade with assuming intense light sources, and the way they guide the viewer’s gaze.
それにより氏の作品は面白味に欠ける凡庸な写実主義に終わることなく、緩急を駆使した描写により遠目にも迫力を与える力強さを有している。距離を取った際のインパクトの低下はディテールが命であるリアリスティックの弱点とも言えるが、氏はそれすらも克服せんとしているのだ。
This allows his work to be powerful even from a distance. Through his use of strong and weak contrast, his work ends up being powerful without ending up with mediocre realism that lacks interest. This feeling of loss of impact when viewed from a distance is said to be a weak point of realistic style, but Holytomo is trying to overcome this weakness.
HOLYTOMO氏は「ここ数年のインクの進化で経年による滲みもほとんどなくなり、よりディテールを追い込めるようになった」と話し、己の技術を磨くことのみならず最新の情報やプロダクトにも貪欲な姿勢を示す。
Holytomo states, “With the evolution of ink over the past several years, bleeding due to aging has almost disappeared, allowing me to pursue more detail.” This idea shows his eagerness to not only improve his own skills, but to also keep up with the latest information and products.
新しいマシンやインクが世に出れば率先して試し、これまでになかったタトゥーの手法を耳にすれば躊躇うことなく取り入れる。氏は「常に環境がアップデートされるからいつまでも正解に辿り着くことがない」と苦笑するが、完成形に達することがないからこそ、氏の進歩は止まるところを知らないのだとも言えるだろう。
When a new machine or ink gets launched, he takes the initiative to try it out, and when he hears of a new tattoo technique, he doesn’t hesitate to adopt it. He laughs, “I never arrive at the right answer because the environment is constantly being updated”. This attitude shows that, in his own mind he will never reach perfection as his progress is unstoppable.
「俺からタトゥーを取ったら何も残らない」。そう言い切るほどに、HOLYTOMO氏はリアリスティックタトゥーにのめり込んでいる。他の何をしていても心が躍ることはなく、休みを取っても次のプロジェクトを考え、居ても立ってもいられなくなるのだと言う。
“If you take away tattooing from me, there is nothing left”. Which is echoed in his dedication to the realistic style he truly loves. No matter what else he does, his heart never gets excited, and even when he takes a break, he cannot sit still and is constantly thinking about his next project.
先にも述べたが日本のタトゥーシーンにおいて、リアリスティックはまだ主流とは言えない立ち位置にある。その中で「先陣を切って盛り上げていきたい」と意気込むHOLYTOMO氏が見据える未来への道のりは決して平坦ではないだろう。けれど氏は持ち前の熱量でその困難さえも楽しんで乗り越えていくに違いない。
As mentioned earlier, the realistic tattoo does not yet hold a mainstream position in the Japanese tattoo scene. Holytomo, is an artist that is willing to “take the lead and make the realistic style exciting.” The road he foresees will not be easy, but he most definitely can enjoy and overcome these difficulties with his enthusiasm.
